On 27th September 1822, Jean-François Champollion announced that he has deciphered the Rosetta Stone. The rock stele weighing 760 kgs has three types of inscriptions (starting from the top) – Ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs, Egyptian demotic script and Ancient Greek. Rosetta stone was discovered on 15th July 1799 by French captain Pierre-François Bouchard in Rosetta, a village in Egypt.
Soon after discovery, detailed study of the inscriptions revealed that the three versions are essentially of the same text. This helped Champollion to transliterate the Egyptian scripts.
