Internet Explorer does not work properly on my laptop. The problem started the day after my son used it. I used to have Yahoo as the home page but its now been changed. The browser also behaves erratically and at times shows pop-ups. I liked Internet Explorer the way it was but am now thinking of changing to Chrome after reading your great reviews. What do you suggest?

I am a big Google browser fan and, yes, I will recommend you download and install Chrome on your computer. But if you (or other readers) prefer Internet Explorer and just want to iron out problems, here is a simple solution that even greenhorns can implement quickly. All you need to do is reset Internet Explorer and it will go back to the factory settings.

Get default settings when you reset Internet Explorer
Please note that when you do reset Internet Explorer all the settings are changed to default and the installed toolbars and add-ons will be disabled. But you can always get these back, right? And since you haven’t mentioned the exact nature of the problem plaguing you, this is the best option. I would also suggest downloading and installing a trusted anti-virus program. The pop-up issue may be because of a spyware or an adware installed accidentally (or intentionally) on the computer – use a adware or spyware removal program.
The steps to reset the Internet Explorer web browser are simple. The screenshots below have been worked out on version 8 (which was the latest at the time of writing)… and on the same thought – check the browser version on your computer and upgrade to the latest.
- Go to the “Tools” menu and select “Internet Options” from the list.
- Spot the “Reset” button under the “Advanced” tab and click on it.
- In the pop-up that’s displayed, put a check mark in the box to delete all personal settings and hit “Reset“.
Now patiently wait for your computer to reset Internet Explorer. The time taken will depend on system configuration, installed toolbars and add-ons.
