Herman Hollerith files a patent for his punched card calculator on 8th June 1887. The US patent number 395,781 was for “Art of Compiling Statistics” and awarded on 8th January 1889.
Hollerith’s invention was of seminal importance as it began the era of semi-automatic data processing. He later founded a company which was consolidated with three others to form Computing-Tabulating-Recording Company that was later renamed to IBM.
