The Popov lightning detector was shown to the Russian Physical and Chemical Society on 7th May 1895. Invented by Alexander Stepanovich Popov, it is a primitive radio receiver which paved the way for future technologies. In Russia and other countries, the day is celebrated as Radio Day.

FYI, the world’s first radio signal was transmitted by Popov on 24th March 1896.
