The first of May is celebrated as May Day in many cultures of the northern hemisphere. The day is marked by festivities that include dancing, carnivals, bonfires and other rituals which are, typically, linked to agriculture.

Maypole dancing that probably originated in Great Britain is a popular activity on May Day.

Countries have attached different meanings to the day. For some it’s the arrival of summer and for others it symbolises the advent of spring. Anyway, most countries declared May Day a holiday, especially for banks.
