British physicist and molecular biologist who won the 1962 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with Francis Crick and James Watson for the deduction of the molecular structure of DNA. It was at Wilkins’ lab that clear X-ray images of DNA were taken, though the structure was worked out by Watson and Crick. He is also known for phosphorescence, isotope separation and optical microscopy.
