18 August, 1877

Phobos, the Mars natural satellite, was discovered by American astronomer Asaph Hall on 18th August 1877. He had also discovered the other Mars moon, Deimos, a few days back – on the 12th of August. Hall was a professor at the United States Naval Observatory and had used their 26-inch (66-cm) telescope, the largest refracting telescope in the world at the time.
