The tremendous success of Facebook has prompted other big Internet companies to venture into the social networking scene or at least take a fresh look at what they already have (hint to Google and Orkut). Yahoo! Pulse is an ambitious venture and with high expectations probably because millions still use many of other Yahoo services such as email, answers, search engine and the portal.

And if you dare to ask why a new services was introduced when they already have Flickr (the original place to create a Yahoo Photo Album? or was it Yahoo Gallery?), don’t be surprised if the answer is “Demographics“.

Anyway, the new Yahoo! Pulse service does seem to make uploading and sharing photos a lot easier for the beginner. Kudos to Yahoo for doing a spectacular job on the interface and the clean layout. So without further ado, let us see how you can make a Yahoo Photo album in the new Pulse service – I like the catchy name too!

Create a Yahoo Photo album – instructions for the beginner

To use the Yahoo! Pulse service, you need to create a free Yahoo ID first… if you don’t have one already. Once signed in successfully, click “Photos” from the left panel and then hit the “Upload Photos” link.

It takes three simple steps to make your first Yahoo Photo album. Select the photos, upload them and finally add titles, descriptions and organize them into albums.

Select Photos to upload on Yahoo! Pulse

Click the “Select” button which opens a small window that shows the folders on your hard disk. Move to the folder that contains the photos you want to put in the Yahoo Photo album and click to select – to choose multiple photos, simply hold down the Ctrl key.

Hit the “Upload” button and patiently wait for the transfer to take place. The time taken for this process depends on the number of photos, their file size and the internet connection speed.

Photos uploaded to Yahoo! Pulse

Once the photos have been uploaded to Yahoo! Pulse, you can immediately click on “Save Details” button. However, it’s advisable to add at least a title and a short description to all images. Those concerned about privacy should set up filters appropriately which will determine who can view and comment on the photos. To make a new Yahoo photo album, click the link and enter the details.

Yahoo! Pulse and Flickr – a quick comparison

Though the two photo album services from Yahoo might seem similar, there are some subtle and important differences… yes, “demographics” is one. I think Yahoo! Pulse with it’s non-busy interface makes it a little easy for the beginner to upload, organize and share photos.

Sadly, at the time of writing, the ability to “tag” one’s friends (or connections, as Yahoo calls it) is missing on Pulse; maybe the developers will include it at a later date. This is one feature that made Facebook photo service so popular.
