The LRO, Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, was launched by NASA on 18th June 2009. The main purpose of the LRO are to map the lunar surface, identify safe landing sites and locate potential resources that may help in future lunar missions.

The LRO is orbiting the moon in an eccentric polar mapping orbit.
