Luna 1 launched by the Soviet Union

The Soviet Union launched Luna 1 on 2^nd January 1959. It was the first spacecraft to reach close to the moon; it also is the first craft to orbit the sun. Incidentally, Luna 2 was the first object to reach the moon when it crashed on the surface of the Earth’s natural on 14^th September 1959.
