18 June, 1948

The long-playing (LP) record album format was introduced by Columbia Records on 18th June 1948. The company held a demonstration at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York.

The LP was quickly adopted and became the new standard of the record industry. With a few modifications and additions, such as stereophonic sound abilities, the LP has remained unchanged over the years and vinyl albums of today still conform to the format.
