Jöns Jacob Berzelius died on 7 August, 1848

Swedish chemist regarded as one of the founding fathers of modern chemistry. He discovered and isolated several elements including cerium, thorium, selenium and silicon.

However, he is best known for determination of atomic weights and his theory of electrochemical dualism which lead to the development of the modern system of chemical formula notation especially the use of abbreviated Latin names for the elements with superscripts to denote the number of atoms present in acidic and basic ingredients.
