A patent for the sewing machine was granted to Isaac Singer on 12th August 1851. Though not the inventor, Singer made important modifications which helped the machine become more practical and adaptable for use at homes. He founded the Singer Sewing Machine Company and sold the sewing machine through payment instalments which put it in reach of the common man and lead to a huge jump in sales.
