American chemist and physicist known for inventing the high-vacuum tube. He received the 1932 Nobel prize in Chemistry for his work on surface chemistry. Langmuir also popularised the "concentric theory of atomic structure" which was based on the cubical atom theory of Gilbert N. Lewis and Walther Kossel’s chemical bonding theory.
