Have you upgraded your iPad iOS to version 4.2? Get ready for a jolt! The very useful iPad Screen Rotation Lock switch has stopped working. It now works as the Mute switch. But you can still prevent the iPad screen rotation using the lock feature in the software.
Lock the iPad screen rotation using the software
Unfortunately, the convenience of locking the screen rotation on the iPad by the flick of a simple switch is no longer available in 4.2, though there are indications that in future upgrades this functionality may come back.

However, you can still use the “software screen rotation lock”. Thus, if you are reading a book or watching a movie and don’t want the screen to rotate whenever you shift weight to the other bum, follow the steps below.
- Get the iPad in the desired mode (landscape or portrait) and make sure the screen has also rotated.
- Click the iPad Home twice in quick succession (a double tap).
- This brings up a row of icons of recently used apps at the bottom – the iPad multitasking bar(?).
- Slide your finger to the right (thus, scrolling to the left).
- You’ll now see the iPad Screen Rotation Lock icon. Simply tap on it.
To get rid of the screen rotation lock, follow the steps above to get to the icon and tap it once again.
