iPad’s birthday falls on 3rd April. It was on this day in 2010 that Apple Inc released their much awaited tablet. The iPad was originally available in only black color with 16, 32 and 64 GB storage (flash memory). It was Wi-Fi only with no camera. The Wi-Fi + 3G iPad was released on 30 April.
Just like the iPhone, the iPad was a dream project of Steve Jobs. He wanted to put a “great computer in a book that you can carry around with you and learn how to use in 20 minutes”. Apple sold more than a million iPads in the first month of launch and, in one year, 15 million of the devices had been picked by consumers.

Here are some facts about the iPad:
- The development on a tablet started much before the mobile phone. However, Steve Jobs pushed the iPad project aside to pay more attention to the iPhone.
- The iPad wasn’t the first tablet from Apple stables. Years before, the company had released Newton MessagePad tablet with a stylus. The product had bombed.
During the development of the iPad, Steve Jobs made it very clear that he wanted a tablet WITHOUT a stylus. Probably the ghost of the Newton MessagePad was still lurking in his mind. Anyway, during the iPhone launch announcement in 2007, Jobs had said, “Who wants a stylus? You have to get em’, put em’ away. You lose them. Yuck.”
Also, after a dinner party with Bill Gates, Jobs instructed his development team to “make a tablet, and it can’t have a keyboard and a stylus.”
The iPad Pro came out with a stylus, though. Known as the Pencil and selling at $99, the stylus is meant primarily for graphic designers and artists. It is certainly “not for email“. - People with pacemakers are advised to keep the iPad at least 6 inches away from their bodies. This is because the device contains strong magnets.
- Damon Albarn created “The Fall” (Gorillaz’s 2010 album) almost entirely on the iPad.
- The music video of Rouge, Luna Sea’s single, was filmed using an iPad.
- The first airlines to do away with the bulky flight manuals (11 kgs) with the iPad was Alaska Airlines.
- It costs only $1.36 per year when charging the iPad once every other day. The high usage of mobile phones, tablets and LCD screens have actually decreased electricity consumption!
- The iPad is a revolutionary product and has changed the way people use the web. As of 2014, more than 80% of mobile web traffic comes from the iPad.
Did you know that the third founder of Apple Computers, Ronald Wayne, never owned an Apple product? Yes, he is the one infamous for selling his 10% Apple stock for a mere $800 just two weeks after the company was formed. Mr. Wayne was gifted an iPad 2 at the Update Conference in Brighton, UK, and that was the first time he owned an Apple product.
