First Wimbledon tennis championship

9 July, 1877

The Wimbledon tennis championship was held for the first time on 9th July 1877. It was organised by the England Croquet Club and took place at the All England Croquet and Lawn Tennis Club. The club had decided to hold a tennis tournament because interest in croquet was fading and also to pay for repairing their pony roller.

The Wimbledon event was later recognised as the first Grand Slam and the world’s first official lawn tennis tournament.
