25 August, 1991

Linus Torvalds announced the first version of an operating system he has been working on. This would later become what we know as Linux.

Torvalds had originally called the operating system “Freax” – a combination of ‘freak‘, ‘free‘ and ‘x‘ (from Unix) – because he thought ‘Linux’ a bit too egoistical. But the name was later changed by Ari Lemmke of the Helsinki University of Technology without consulting Torvalds!
