The world’s first ovariotomy was performed on 25th December 1809 by Dr. Ephraim McDowell. A 10.2 kg ovarian tumour from Jane Todd Crawford was removed successfully by Dr. McDowell in a operation that lasted 25 minutes without any anesthetic or antisepsis (they being unknown to the medical world at that time). Jane Crawford made a full recovery in 25 days and lived for another 32 years.
