The first issue of The Times newspaper was published in London on 1st January 1788. It was originally called The Daily Universal Register.
The paper is famous for using the now popular serifed font, Times New Roman. The typeface was commissioned by the publication and was designed by Victor Lardent who collaborated with Stanley Morison of Monotype. Times New Roman font was used for the first time on 3rd October 1932.
Also, The Times was the first newspaper to publish Sudoku. The hugely popular number puzzle first appeared on 12th November 2004.
