9 September, 1839

On 9th September 1839, the first glass plate photograph was taken by John Herschel, British inventor and photography pioneer. Herschel was also the first to use the term photography for the process (the French spelling photographie had been employed four years earlier by Hércules Florence). Herschel also coined the terms positive and negative.
