22 July, 1951

On 22nd July 1951, Tsygan and Dezik became the first dogs to be put in space. They were sent by the Soviet Union and reached an altitude of 110 kilometres.

Laika was the first dog to be put in orbit (again by the Soviet Union). In fact, Laika was the first higher-living being born on Earth to be put in orbit. She was aboard Sputnik 2 craft and reached orbit on 3rd November 1957. Laika later died when the oxygen supply ran out.
