In February 2011, Executive Jet Management, which flies small chartered jets, became the first airlines to replace the bulky hardcopy flight manuals with digital documents on the iPad. The shifted was implemented only after it was approved by the Federal Aviation Administration.
A few months later, in June, Alaska Airlines became the first major airline to replace 11 kgs printed flight manuals with the 680 gms iPad.
