15 June, 1785

The first air crash casualties were Jean-François Pilâtre de Rozier and Pierre Romain. Their hot air balloon exploded during their attempt to cross the English Channel on the 15th of June 1785.

Incidentally, Jean-François Pilâtre de Rozier was the pilot of the first-ever manned flight in 1783, both tethered and untethered.
