The Fail Whale, Twitter’s error message, was designed by Yiying Lu of Sydney, Australia. She had originally designed it for a birthday card. Later, the illustration was put on iStockPhoto, from where it was picked up by the microblogging web site.

The first commercial spam was posted on Usenet by Laurence Canter and Martha Siegel. They used a Perl script to post their message, "Green Card Lottery - Final One?", to about 5,500 discussion groups. [more...]
