Am I allowed to create a second email address? I need an extra one for a different purpose.
Yes, of course you can create a second email address! In fact you can create as many as you want. There is nothing stopping you in creating another email address and in most cases, it would be a good bet.
For instance, having business and personal email messages arriving at different email accounts is an excellent way to segregate your online correspondences. In fact, most people I know do this. Owning multiple email addresses is certainly not a crime; rather it helps you in staying organized.
But, as with other things in life, too much of anything is bad. Make sure that you have a good reason to use multiple email accounts. Thus, it would be an extreme form of organization if you have one email account for friends and one for family. A single email account for personal online correspondence is sufficient; if you do want to separate emails from these two groups, you can employ folders (as in Hotmail or Yahoo! Mail) or labels in Gmail.

It is also not necessary for you to pick a service which is different from what you presently use. Thus, if your first email account is on Yahoo and you like that service (I do), go ahead and get a second Yahoo email address – rest assured, as far as I know, you wouldn’t be in breach of any terms of service.
Hotmail, Gmail and Yahoo! Mail have both free and paid email services. The free email account is what I would suggest at this stage. After some time, if you feel it lacks in any aspect or if you want more features such as storage space or email attachment size, you can always upgrade to the paid version. It, thus, won’t cost you anything to create two email addresses on the same service.
Having multiple email accounts leads to one problem – how to save time. Because checking web-based accounts individually will always take more time than going through one. But there is a very elegant solution. Use an email client or an email program. These let you download email to from the online email servers directly to your computer. The added benefit is maintaining a copy of all your email messages locally so would be able to access them even without an active internet connection.
There are many email programs that you can download and install and most likely you already have one on your computer – refer download email software. Email programs help collect messages from different email accounts such as those from web-based services, your ISP or even your web site.
