Founder IMDb. The now popular movie database web site began in 1990 on Usenet as rec.arts.movies. It consisted of lists of actors, actresses, and directors with unix shell scripts for searching the data. It was later shifted from Usenet to a server at Cardiff University in Wales and came to been known as the Cardiff Internet Movie Database.
In 1998, Amazon.com purchased the service to compliment their DVD and Video sales.
