Charles Martin Hall produces aluminium.

23 February, 1886

On 23rd February 1886, American chemist Charles Martin Hall produced aluminium using an inexpensive method. He was assisted in the endeavour by his older sister Julia Brainerd Hall. Because of its properties and, now easy production, the metal gained widespread use.
