I will be shifting to Manhattan in a week. I was told by my ISP that in order to continue using their services and retain my email address, I would have to change the incoming and outgoing email server settings on my computer? Can I really do this? Will it not affect the way I send and receive email?

Internet Service Providers (ISP) can be local or national. The ones who have a presence across different states may ask you to change the incoming and outgoing email server if you want to continue using their services and your email account. For instance, Road Runner’s incoming and outgoing email server addresses are different for their different locations.

Will changing the incoming and outgoing server information change your email address?

The incoming and outgoing server addresses are required to send and receive messages. They should (ideally) not concern your email address. But one cannot be sure because it all depends on how things have been set up in at ISP. I have already detailed why it’s a bad idea to use an ISP email address as the primary address for online communication and continue to moot my point. Get an email address from one of the free web based email services and rid yourself of the trouble of sticking to one ISP.

Web based email addresses have many advantages. Gone are the days when space was a constraint because with competition some are now offering unlimited storage for email. The ability to check and manage your web based email account from any computer (as long it has an internet access), literally sets you free! Finally, with POP access free on Hotmail and Gmail, messages can be downloaded and stored on your computer. Yahoo users need to pay only $20 to get email to their computer via an email client.
