12 April, 1831

On 12th April 1831, Broughton Suspension Bridge collapsed when is started to vibrate in time with the marching of 74 men of the 60th Rifle Corps. This clearly demonstrated mechanical resonance and prompted the British army to issue orders to “break step” when crossing a bridge.
