24 December, 1968

Apollo 8 entered the orbit around the moon on 24th December 1968. The three crew members – Frank Borman, James Lovell and William Anders – become the first humans to do so and their sojourn consisted of ten lunar orbits during which they broadcast live TV pictures. Because of their feat of going “where no man has gone before”, the Apollo 8 astronauts were honoured with Time magazine’s “Person of the Year”.
