Alexander Stepanovich Popov was born on 16 March, 1859

Russian physicist and inventor of the radio as per Russians and east Europeans. Popov demonstrated the lighting detector to the Russian Physical and Chemical Society in Saint Petersburg on 7th May 1895. The day is honoured as Radio Day in Russia and a few other countries. He is also known for making the world’s first radio transmission on 24th March 1896 between two different buildings in St Petersburg.
