AbioCor, the total artificial heart, was first implanted on 2nd July 2001. It was developed by AbioMed, a company based out of Massachusetts. The self-contained artificial heart ran on a rechargeable source of power with the battery being charged by a transcutaneous energy transmission (TET) system.
However, the AbioCor, because of its size, could only be implanted on people with a large frame. The device had a life expectancy of 18 months.
