  4. World’s first webcam switched off

22 August, 2001

The world’s first webcam was set up in 1991 to monitor the Trojan Room coffee pot at the Computer Laboratory of the University of Cambridge. In addition to being a novelty, the world wide web had just started, the webcam was the height of geekiness.

It was put up primarily so that people in the building can check the coffee level in the pot online and avoid unnecessary trip (and disappointment) if it was empty.

The webcam gained immense popularity at the beginning especially because the web was still in its infancy. It was, however, pulled down on 22nd August 2001.
