French mathematician and astronomer best known for predicting the existence and position of the planet Neptune using only mathematics. He sent his results to German astronomer Johann Gottfried Galle who discovered the planet based on Verrier’s calculations. This marks a significant moment in 19th century science.
By the way, Neptune was observed by Galileo in 1612 but had been classified as a fixed star.
