21 October, 1879

Thomas Edison invented his version of the electric bulb on 21st October 1879. Contrary to popular belief, Edison did not invent the bulb. He simply modified it so that it would last longer creating a sustainable incandescent light source. Edison used a filament of carbonised thread.

The bulb was tested the following day and lasted for 13.5 hours. He went on to patent his invention the following year. On the 1st of October 1880, Edison opened the first electric bulb factory.
