  4. Nicola Tesla Day

Referred to as World Tesla Day,International Tesla Day or just Tesla Day, 10th July is the birthday of one of the greatest scientists and futurists – Nikola Tesla.

Nikola Tesla was a Serbian engineer who later shifted to the United States. He was born on the day in 1856 during a ferocious lightning storm. The midwife, who delivered baby Nikola, mentioned that this is a bad omen. His mother replied, “My Nikola will be a child of light”.

Her words proved prophetic and Tesla became a pioneer in the field of alternating current (AC). He also contributed to the the design and the implementation of the modern day electric supply system. Tesla held several patents for his discoveries and inventions which earned him a lot of money.

All throughout his life in the US, Tesla was involved in a bitter conflict with the great American scientist and inventor Thomas Alva Edison in what we now know as the “War of Currents”. Edison was in favour of DC (direct current) while Tesla backed his AC (alternating current).

Tesla is also famous for the induction motor, the rotating magnetic field and the Tesla coil. The SI unit of magnetic flux density, tesla, is named after him.
