I was wondering if it’s possible to make my email ID so I don’t have to use my husbands. What is the best way to do this and how much will it cost? Simple instructions without technical jargon will be highly appreciated. Thank you for your help in advance.

Hey Elizabeth, I’ve got some good news and some excellent news! Since you are already using your husband’s email and are familiar with computers, you would be able to make an email ID in a couple of minutes with the instructions below. And the cost of this email ID will be zero… yes, nothing, zilch!

But as with most other things, I advise a little care especially since you still seem like a greenhorn (no disrespect intended because I haven’t forgotten the days when I was a rookie). Please read the contents of this page thoroughly and pay close attention to the bullet points listed at the end.
The best way to make an email ID
In my opinion, the best way for you to make an email ID is to use an online free service. Though there are hundreds, if not thousands, web sites offering email accounts with no costs attached, there are three that stand out from the rest.
- Yahoo! Mail from Yahoo! offers unlimited space and loads of other goodies. Extremely simple to use and probably the best web based email service – Quickly learn to make a Yahoo email address.
- Hotmail from Microsoft, as far as I know, was the world’s first free email ID provider. Hotmail is still quite a popular service with millions of subscribers – Create a Hotmail email address for free.
- Gmail from Google: Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the last 10 years, you probably know of Google. And even though Gmail didn’t have the ‘first-mover advantage’, it has given the other two biggies a run for their money. With the exception of stationery, an email account from Gmail is much more feature rich – Instructions on how to get free Gmail email.
So which email service should you choose? Now I consider Yahoo email the best email ever but the other two are equally good. Obviously, this won’t help you in arriving at a decision… so make an email ID on all the three services! Keep the one you like and ignore the others; there is no need to close the account because after a specified number of days, the email will expire on its own. FYI, you can retain and keep using all three email IDs if you so want. Click on the links mentioned above and follow the instructions on these pages; I’ve included screenshots with the directions to help you at each step.
What do you need to make that email ID?
A computer with an active internet connection is all that’s required to make an email ID in the three services I listed above – a dash of common sense will certainly help. You need to fill out an online from at these services which should be simple because you are asked to provide very basic information such as your name, location, birthday etc. Here are certain things you should to know beforehand:
- If your husband’s email is at one of the services I mentioned above, you might see his account (with the list of emails) instead of the sign up / registration form. In such cases, please sign out of the service (click the Sign out, Log out or equivalent link). You may also need to delete the browser cache if the problem persists. Please read how to use two email accounts from one computer, because this will help you in future.
- Choose your email ID / username wisely because it will be with you for a long time. Changing an email address is not difficult but why walk down that path when it can be altogether avoided by being a little sensible at the beginning.
- At the time of creating the email ID you shall be asked to type in a password that you want to use for the account. Ensure the password is not something people can guess outright and, at the same time, don’t make it so complex that even you will have difficulty recalling it. Please read how to make a password for details which shall also give you pointers on taking care of sensitive login information.
- The registration forms also have fields for one or two security questions. Do not take these lightly because you will have to use this information in getting hold of your email account in case you forget / lose the password.
- You can ignore the alternate email address field in the registration form if this is the first email ID you are making.
Lastly, when you do get an email account, read how to send email for more tips and help. And though this is a jumping the gun, you can also set up email on your computer so that messages are downloaded and stored on your local machine.
