This page is for beginners – people who have just about started using the internet and have been introduced to the wonderful work of instantaneous communication – email! There are many advantages of email over the more traditional form of post, which the techies call snail mail. The beauty of email communication lies in its simplicity and that it’s free or costs a negligible amount to send a message.

However, if you’ve been intimidated by the tons of options, help is at hand. In this article, we’ll touch upon some of the basics of email and I shall then point you to the other articles through which you can learn – step by step – how to email.

Basic computer knowledge is a required to learn how to email

To know how to send email messages, you are required to have a basic working knowledge of the computer. For instance, you should be able to use a web browser and other simple programs. Knowing your way around the keyboard is helpful though no one expects that you should type fast.

An account is a prerequisite to send an email message

First things first. In order to learn how to email, you need to have an email account. Unless you are loaded and want to spend money just for the pleasure of it, you can get an email address for free. Yes, 100% gratis. There are tons of services from reputed companies that would love to have you as a user of their free email facility. Why? Hmmm, that’s not an easy question to answer and certainly beyond the scope of this article… trust me on this and let us get back to the discussion.

The three most popular email services in the world are Gmail from Google, Hotmail (also called Windows Live Hotmail) from Microsoft and Yahoo! Mail from Yahoo! And to clarify a few points at the very beginning, you can create an email account at ALL OF these services if you so want. In fact, for beginners, I recommend the same – use all these three services and see which one you like. You can then close the other email accounts or use them less frequently. So if you don’t have an email account yet, refer one of the links below to create one:

By the way, all the free services I mentioned above also provide a paid email account which doesn’t cost much. The paid accounts have some additional features but I doubt you would be able to take full advantages of them as you are just starting out. Anyway, there is nothing stopping you from shelling out a few greenbacks for added customer support and better features.

On a similar note, the email accounts from Hotmail, Gmail or Yahoo mail will get you a generic email address such as yourname@gmail.com. If you want a more exotic address to satisfy your ego (or whatever) you can also get your own email address at a own domain name and this will certainly cost you though not much.

So how do I email?

Once you have an email address, you need to login at the account. Typically, you should see the inbox when you enter your account. The inbox is a virtual box in which all incoming email is stored. If you look around the page, you should find a Compose email or equivalent link. Clicking on it will present an online form – put in the recipients email address, the email subject and the contents and, when done, click on the Send link/button to let it go. For step by step instructions on how to send email from the three popular services, please refer the links below.
