Here are a few tips and pieces of advice.
- Do you know the attachment file size limit of your email account? Please note that if you have 5GB of free space in your inbox, you cannot attach and send a DVD file! The inbox space is different from the email attachment size.
- Have you tried compressing the file size using the operating system’s inbuilt zipping tool or a third party application – there are tons of excellent zipping programs available. Is the compressed file size smaller than the email attachment restriction?
- Have you tried splitting the file into manageable and smaller chunks? Do these chunks fall under the attachment size limit? If not, run the filesplitter again with a new and smaller value.
- Is the email being returned to you? If so, the recipient’s account is rejecting the email message – and there can be many reasons for this. The receivers email inbox is full, your email address has been blocked etc. Try sending an email without the attachment to see if it goes through.
- The large file you are sending over email is crossing the attachment limit of the recipient’s account.
- Are you trying to send an executable file? If so, many email services will reject the email. Cloaking the executable file by zipping or compressing it will not help. Gmail, for example, quickly identifies such files and discards the email message.
- There may be a possibility that the email attachment forwarded by you is infected with a virus or a worm! Most online email services will trap such emails and delete them.
- Is your email being identified as spam and sent to the “spam” or “junk” folder? Online web based email accounts such as those from Gmail. Yahoo! Mail or Hotmail, have an automated junk/spam email filter that captures incoming email which look like spam. If your email with the large file attachment cannot go through to the inbox, there is a possibility that it’s being sent directly to the junk folder. Contact the recipient and ask them to check this folder.
I also advise sending a quick email without any attachments to know if its indeed reaching the recipient. Finally, if everything fails and you still cannot send large file attachments over email, consider using a file sharing service. Most of such services allow you to create a free account and upload any kind of file. Once you do that, you get a link to the file which you can send across to the recipient over email. Thus, you would now be sending only a link rather than the file…. simpler and better.
