29 June, 1888

George Frideric Handel’s Israel in Egypt was recorded onto a phonograph cylinder by George Edward Gouraud on 29th June 1888. For many years, it was believed to be the world’s oldest music recording.

FYI, the oldest known recording of a human voice was on Édouard-Léon Scott de Martinville’s Phonautograph. Another contender for the oldest recording is that of The Lost Chord.
