What do you do once you have created a favicon?

Once you have created the favicon, simply connect to your web site server and upload it in the document root (the directory that stores the index.html or equivalent file). You can upload it using FTP or a web based file manager, if your hosting service has provided one.

Can a web site have several favicons?

Yes, absolutely! Actually, each web page can have a favicon but I guess this is overkill. The best is to have a favicon for web pages with a common theme. You can have a different favicon for pages that are either very different from the common pages or for different sections of the web site.

If you want a web page to have a different favicon, you need to put these instructions explicitly in the HTML code of that web page. You can do this by inserting the following lines in the <HEAD> section.

	type="image/x-icon">

<link rel="shortcut icon" href="path_to_favicon.ico"
	type="image/x-icon">

Where path_to_favicon.ico is the URL (absolute or relative) of the favicon.ico file.

Creating a favicon

Start your favorite image editing program and create a new 16x16 pixel document.
Draw or copy a resized version of your logo (if you want to use it in the favicon)
Decrease the number of colors to 16
Save this image as a .bmp or .gif
Start the icon editing program (I use Irfanview) and open the image which you have created in the previous step.
Select File - Save As (or something equivalent)
Then select .ico from the file format list and save the file.

Can I get free favicons online?

I guess you can (haven't checked this out myself) but then remember, the essence of using favicons is lost if you employ any-odd image to represent your web site.
