22 October, 1879

On 22nd October 1879, Thomas Alva Edison tested his electric bulb. It lasted 13.5 hours paving the way for the practical use of a long-lasting incandescent light source. Edison had invented his version of the bulb with a filament of carbonised thread, just a day before.

It is believed that the inventor of the first electric bulb was Britisher Joseph Swan. Though his bulbs did not last long, they were used to illuminate his house (the first home in the world to be lit by electricity) and the Savoy Theatre in London (the first building in the world to use light bulbs).
