Yahoo! Mail spell check problem - Its not working

The past few days, I received many emails regarding a Yahoo Mail spell checker problem. Users seem to be troubled with the non-functional nature of the feature and have been looking desperately for solutions. Here are some of the complains:

My spell check doesn’t work anymore. In my emails, misspelled words are highlighted in red and a drop down menu gives suggestions, but I can’t make the corrections anymore. And I can’t directly change the misspelled word as long as it is underlined in red. I have to send the email to myself to get rid of the red underlining and then manually change each incorrect word myself before sending.

In the past when I click on one of the auto-suggested words, it automatically replaces the mis-spelled word in the email. But not of late. Now I have to manually correct the word which is very time consuming.

Yahoo Mail spell checker has a problem and is not working on my emails. When I click on the “Spelling” icon, I get disconnected from the messenger and the feature does not work. There are no corrections being made.

I can’t use Yahoo Mail spell checker properly after composing my e-mail. I click on the icon, the wrong words are highlighted with red underline. When choosing the correct word I still get the wrong one with the red line.

My Yahoo account have been developing a problem day after day of not checking / correcting spelling mistakes.

These are just five of the many emails I received. It seems like this spell checker problem has affected many subscribers. However, when I tried this out on my Yahoo account I didn’t face any difficulty in identifying incorrect words and changing them.

Solving the Yahoo Mail spell checker problem

But, if the Yahoo mail spell check feature is not working properly on your account here are a few things I suggest:

  • Upgrade to the latest version of the web browser: Probably, and this is just my guess, Yahoo has changed the programming behind the spell checker, especially the drop down and word replacement functionality so that it works only on the latest versions of the most popular web browsers.
  • Shift to the All-new Yahoo! Mail from the Classic version because I checked this feature only on the former. Please read how to switch the Yahoo mail versions to know more.
  • Contact Yahoo support if the problem persists. Yahoo Hotline – 1-866-562-7219, 1-800-699-2466 or 1-866-562-7249.

FYI, I checked the Yahoo spell checker problem when working on the Google Chrome web browser from both Windows Vista and Windows 7 operating systems.

They mention that the Yahoo email spell checker, was going to be fixed on Nov. 15, and still they have not fixed it. Is it going to be fixed?

  • Manish November 16th, 2009

No I don’t think the Yahoo spell check problem has been solved. You can still read a lot complaints on this issue over the web. I’m sure the Yahoo engineers are working on it. By the by, the issue seems to be plaguing only Yahoo All-new mail users but I don’t see it in my account. Like I mentioned, you can switch versions and keep your fingers crossed.

Send emails describing this problem to the media especially those that cover technology. Maybe Yahoo will actually work on the problem if the media starts report about it.

  • Manish November 19th, 2009

I’m sure the media knows about this – it’s all over the web. Look at the number of complaints in Yahoo Answers.

    Hi,

It would appear that there are problems with the spellcheck and moving emails into a folder. Can you advise when this will be fixed.

    Thanks

What happened to spell check on yahoo email? I have to insert the language each time, select the underlined word, delete it and retype the correct spelling and the correct spelling disappears when I retype.
This seems a total waste mand an outdated system
How can insert spellcheck in my emails?

  • Manish November 19th, 2009

I don’t seem to have any problems – checked up again. Using the All-New Mail on Google Chrome web browser.

My spell check stopped correcting misspelled words about a month ago. Not only that but I can’t get the cursor at end of a word to correct it unless I go way up in the address space or cc space then drop down to misspelled word and try to spell it right. Tool bar doesn’t help me get anywhere. What’s the problem I can’t spell worth a damn and need my spell check! Help!!!!

Whenever I am using the spell check feature in my mail account – I do the drop down, it gives me options for spelling, I choose the correct spelling and it fails to change the word to the correct word in the email. What setting is incorrect?

my problem is different than all the above problems. I will type an email. Spellcheck it, if there are no errors the email stay in the middle of my screen. If there are errors, the whole email slides to the left of the computer screen, I then have to scroll down to the bar and move the email back into the center of the screen, make the corrections, then as soon as it finds another error, the email slides to the left of the screen once again, at least a 1/4 of the email is hidden to the left until I bring it back into the center of screen.

Denise, try with a different web browser and see if that works. I suppose you might be using a program in which the Yahoo webmail interface doesn’t work well.

  • Alex Porter December 18th, 2010

My issue is the same as Denises’( 2/10/10). When I hit spell check, the screen shifts to the left. I use the scroll bar to center the message and correct the word. After correction, I move to the next word and, the screen shifts to the left again. This started about 3 months ago. And the only way that I can do quick corrections is to change the zoom level to something LESS than 100%.
