Set up Windstream email on Outlook Express

This page has instructions to set up a Windstream email account on Outlook Express. The steps are pretty straightforward and you should have no difficulty. The slideshow has screenshots of the procedure which you can refer when in doubt.

Why should you set up and configure Windstream email account in Outlook Express?

An email account can be accessed in two ways – with web browsers (webmail interface) or email programs. The former option is definitely easier for the beginner – refer Windstream email login. But there are many advantages of using Outlook Express for your Windstream email account – messages are stored on your own computer and accessible at all times and you don’t need to worry about exceeding the 50MB storage limit.

To set up Windstream email in Outlook Express you need the username, password and the incoming and outgoing email servers information. The steps are as follows:

• Start Outlook Express and go to “Tools” and select “Accounts” from the menu – [Slide 1].
• In the Internet Accounts pop-up, click the “Add” button and choose “Mail” – [Slide 2]. By the way, if you have other email accounts configured in Outlook Express, they would be listed in this window.
• Enter your full name and hit “Next” – [Slide 3].
• Type in your email address: username@windstream.net – [Slide 4].
• Provide the Windstream incoming and outgoing servers in the appropriate fields – [Slide 5]
  Incoming mail (POP3, IMAP or HTTP) server: pop.windstream.net
  Outgoing mail (SMTP ) server: smtp.windstream.net
• Enter the full email address in the “Account name” field and provide the program with the account password – [Slide 6].
• Click “Finish” to close this pop-up. The Windstream email account has been set up in Outlook Express [Slide 7] and would be now listed in the Internet Accounts window.
• Though you’ll receive email without problems, sending messages would result in an error message. For this we have to change some settings for the newly added Windstream email account.
• Select the account from and click “Properties” button (on the right) – [Slide 8].
• A pop-up is displayed. Move to the “Servers” tab and check the box in front of “My server requires authentication” – [Slide 9]. Click “Apply” followed by “OK” to close this pop-up and then the previous one.

The Outlook Express instructions to download email are also applicable for Windows Mail on Vista because these two programs are quite similar.

Note: To keep your email private so that others cannot see the messages, set up the Windstream account as a password protected Outlook Express identity.
