Posted on March 7, 2011 under Email, Hotmail, Internet Tips  |  2 Comments

I’ve received an email from the Hotmail Team (pilsbryi@hotmail.com) with the subject “Closure of Hotmail Account!!!”. I’ve been asked to provide my name, password, date of birth, country/territory. Is this valid or a scam?
Richard Abraham

This is most definitely a phishing scam and should be junked right away. Select the message, click “Mark as” and choose the “Phishing scam” from the drop down menu – refer image below. Once you’ve done that, continue reading to find out how I immediately identified this ‘Closure of Hotmail account’ as a scam.

I’ve not been able to access my email account for the past two days. Is there a Yahoo phone number to which I can call and get assistance? I’m sure the password is correct as I have used it for years.
Trevor Malisa

I’m aware of three Yahoo phone numbers. However, please note the following:

MySQL login error 1045 (28000): Access denied for user ODBC@localhost

Posted on March 7, 2011 under Answers, Web Development  |  1 Comment

I installed MySQL on a desktop PC (VISTA). But after typing “mysql” at the DOS prompt, I get an error message: “ERROR 1045 (28000): Access denied for user ‘ODBC’@'localhost’ (using password: NO)“. My question is how do I successfully login to use MySQL? I’ve heard of phpMyAdmin – isn’t this better? Thank you
Wayne

You cannot login at MySQL server with a simple mysql command at the prompt. It is bound to result in the MySQL login error 1045 (28000): Access denied error. Actually, the command is incomplete as the login details are missing.

Anyway, this is a very minor issue and can be solved quickly by using the correct MySQL login command at the terminal window.

Manage folders is missing on Hotmail issue

Posted on February 21, 2011 under Answers, Hotmail  |  Leave a comment

I want to delete some of my folders and I don’t seem to have “Manage Folders” in my account. I hope you can help me. Thank you.
Sandra Cohen

Microsoft has changed the GUI of the Hotmail email service. They’ve tried to make it more intuitive and less cramped. Thus, many features that were immediately accessible in the previous version are now hidden behind mouse-over or mouse-click actions. A case in point is “Manage folders” which was placed below the list of folders in the left pane at your Hotmail account.

How many websites are there in the world?

Posted on February 21, 2011 under Answers, Other  |  1 Comment

I wanted to know how many web sites are there in the world. I’ve searched Google and have got varied results. Maybe you can help me out. I need to know the number of web sites for a school project.
Brian Doole

This seemingly simple question is not an easy one to answer. The problem is that no single agency controls the Internet (even though we all like to think that the CIA does!). Even so, can we come up with some kind of figure for the total number of web sites in the world?

Why did I buy an iPad?

Posted on January 26, 2011 under iPad  |  Leave a comment

About sevens months ago, I wrote a post listing the reasons why I didn’t buy an iPad; you can read the gory details by clicking on that link. Even so, I always wondered why I didn’t go in for this device? Was writing that blog post a case of sour grapes? To be truthful… yes!

Printout of screen

Posted on January 26, 2011 under Answers, Internet Tips, Web Humor  |  1 Comment

My question probably has a very simple answer. I want to know how to take a printout of the screen. The program I use does have a ‘print’ option but that doesn’t get me what I want. Is it possible to print the entire contents displayed on the computer monitor?
Marriam Khamis

One way to take a printout of the screen (the entire contents of your computer display) is to place the monitor on the photocopy machine and hit the copy button as in the image below. Don’t have a photocopier? Hmmm…
OK, I agree that wasn’t such a good joke but the photo sure is funny. Anyway, here are simpler steps.

Web developer vs. Web designer

Web designs and developersAs purists would have you believe, web designs and web developers are NOT the same. So one is a designer and the other a programmer? Yes, and there is more. But first, a cool infograph to brighten your day.
