Printout of screen
Posted on January 26, 2011 under Answers, Internet Tips, Web Humor | 1 Comment
My question probably has a very simple answer. I want to know how to take a printout of the screen. The program I use does have a ‘print’ option but that doesn’t get me what I want. Is it possible to print the entire contents displayed on the computer monitor?
Marriam Khamis
One way to take a printout of the screen (the entire contents of your computer display) is to place the monitor on the photocopy machine and hit the copy button as in the image below. Don’t have a photocopier? Hmmm…
OK, I agree that wasn’t such a good joke but the photo sure is funny. Anyway, here are simpler steps.

Client-side and server-side programming languages – Differences
Posted on November 30, 2010 under Internet Tips, Web Development | Leave a comment
Before I explain the differences between client-side and server-side programming languages, let me provide a brief on clients and servers. Once you understand what these entities are, it will be easy to grasp how scripts (programs) run on them and, yes, the dissimilarities. More »
JavaScript email
Posted on November 30, 2010 under Answers, Internet Tips | Leave a comment
I have started to learn JavaScript about a week back so I’m just a beginner. A pressing objective is to create a form on a website through which visitors can send an email. How can I use JavaScript to send an email from a website?
Stan
JavaScript is primarily a client-side language, which means it runs on the web browser program. However, to email visitor feedback from a web site form you need to take the help of a script that’s executed on the server. Thus, there is no way client-side JavaScript can be used on its own to send email via a form on a web site! Technically, email is sent from the server and not from a client. More »

Tracing a 16 year period from 1994 to 2010, the chart below presents a super-short History of Search; but it still has some gems in it. For instance, I never knew why the domain dmoz.org was used for the open directory project!

Change username – Is it possible?
Posted on October 30, 2010 under Answers, Internet Tips | Leave a comment
I’m fairly new to the Internet and still learning the ropes. I created a new account and in my hurry forgot to double check the username. It now has a wrong spelling of my name. Is it possible to change my username? If not, what is the best solution to my predicament?
Katerina Mertikas
A username of an online account can only be changed if it’s allowed by the service. In the case of email, for instance, the username determines the email address and hence, most service providers do not give an option to subscribers to change the username. And rightly so, else people would be modifying their email addresses at every whim. But that does not mean you cannot change an email address… you can!

Check password strength
Posted on October 26, 2010 under Internet Tips | Leave a comment
Most, if not all, online accounts can only be accessed with the correct username and password. Though the username identifies your account and is generally known to others (as in the case of email accounts), it’s the password that provides the needed security. You not only have to keep the password away from prying eyes but also make sure that it is sufficiently convoluted so that it cannot be guessed in a few tries. HowSecureIsMyPassword is a neat web based service with which you can check the password for strength and complexity. And it gives some really cool and surprisingly intelligent results.

Block spam at Yahoo email account
Posted on August 14, 2010 under Email, Internet Tips, Yahoo | 1 Comment
I get too much spam at my Yahoo account. I was thinking of changing the email address. But, as you probably know, that’s not easy. Open to any sensible advice.
Donald Morrow
I don’t agree… it’s easy to change a Yahoo email address. But I don’t think it will work in your case… and it does bring forth additional problems. I am kind of surprised that your account is inundated with spam because Yahoo takes great pride in the accuracy of its filter. Anyway, there are two ways to block spam at your Yahoo account. One is to use a free third party service and the other is to pay a nominal sum to upgrade the account to Plus. Let me walk you through these two options. More »
Difference between POP3 and IMAP
Posted on August 2, 2010 under Email, Internet Tips | 4 Comments
A few days back, I was helping my wife set up AOL email on her new laptop. We decided on using Windows Live Mail, the default mail program on the Windows 7 operating system. When configuring the email settings manually, I asked which email protocol she would prefer. After a brief moment of complete silence, she rolls up her eyes and says, Do you think I know or would like to know the difference between POP3 and IMAP

Captcha definition – Why are you asked to type the two words?
Posted on July 16, 2010 under Blogging, Internet Tips, Other, Web Development | 8 Comments
It is very difficult to figure out the purpose of the mixed-up wavy letters in the two words. I think I have them right, in fact, I know I do in some cases. Please explain the point to me.
Anne Lawson
Why are the two words one is required to type when registering always so fancy in design? It’s hard to read them.
Maja Novak
What is Captcha? Definition and a super quick intro
Anne and Maja are referring to what is known as Captcha, or more correctly, Text CAPTCHA. Nowadays you find them almost everywhere on the net… both popular and the not-so-famous web sites and blogs. And there is one right on this page – scroll down to check it out.
Captcha is a type of challenge-response test used in computing to ensure that the response is not generated by a computer
(source Wikipedia). In layman’s terms, the aim of the text Captcha is to offer a puzzle which only humans are able to solve. Typically, text Captcha has a set of randomly generated alphanumeric characters that are wavy, battered, crossed with lines and / or close to each other (almost overlapping).

Copy Hotmail email folders to the computer
Posted on March 27, 2010 under Hotmail, Internet Tips | Leave a comment
How do I copy folders from my Hotmail email account to my desktop computer? I have folders that I do not want deleted, just want to store email folders.
Donna
With free POP access enabled on all Hotmail email accounts, one can quickly copy and store email on the local computer. This involves setting up the Hotmail account on a email client like Outlook Express. Messages once downloaded to your computer, would be available even without an active internet connection – read advantages of email programs for details.
