Closure of Hotmail account: phishing scam example
Posted on March 7, 2011 under Email, Hotmail, Internet Tips | 2 Comments
I’ve received an email from the Hotmail Team (pilsbryi@hotmail.com) with the subject “Closure of Hotmail Account!!!”. I’ve been asked to provide my name, password, date of birth, country/territory. Is this valid or a scam?
Richard Abraham
This is most definitely a phishing scam and should be junked right away. Select the message, click “Mark as” and choose the “Phishing scam” from the drop down menu – refer image below. Once you’ve done that, continue reading to find out how I immediately identified this ‘Closure of Hotmail account’ as a scam.

Manage folders is missing on Hotmail issue
Posted on February 21, 2011 under Answers, Hotmail | Leave a comment
I want to delete some of my folders and I don’t seem to have “Manage Folders” in my account. I hope you can help me. Thank you.
Sandra Cohen
Microsoft has changed the GUI of the Hotmail email service. They’ve tried to make it more intuitive and less cramped. Thus, many features that were immediately accessible in the previous version are now hidden behind mouse-over or mouse-click actions. A case in point is “Manage folders” which was placed below the list of folders in the left pane at your Hotmail account.

Hotmail account deactivated in 24 hours because of unsuccessful login attempts mail scam
Posted on December 15, 2010 under Hotmail | 4 Comments
I got an email today in which I was asked to sign in or my email will be deactivated. Is this a scam? The email mentioned that my Hotmail email account will be deactivated in 24 hours because of several unsuccessful login attempts. Is this a scam?
Felisha Shaw
It’s not very difficult to identify an email scam – in your case, it looks like a phishing attempt. So here is a little exercise. Let’s see if you can spot the elements by which I’ve arrived at the conclusion that this ‘Hotmail account will be deactivated because of unsuccessful login attempts’ doesn’t originate from the legitimate Windows Live Hotmail service.

Why is the Advanced tab missing from email account properties?
Posted on November 8, 2010 under Answers, Hotmail | Leave a comment
I was following your instructions on how to keep a copy of email on the server but I find the ‘Advanced’ tab missing. Can you help me?
William
This post addresses the concern of Windows Live Hotmail users who find the Advanced tab missing from the account properties when they set up the email in the default Windows client.
By default, a Hotmail account is configured on free Microsoft email programs – Outlook Express, Windows Mail and Windows Live Mail – using the DeltaSynch (previously, DAV) email protocol which ensures that the online account is kept synchronized with the one on your computer. The ‘Advanced’ tab is missing for the Hotmail account set up on Windows Live Mail because it is not required. To get this functionality and leave a copy of the message on the server you need to use POP (Post Office Protocol).

Hotmail account sends Viagra email – how to stop
Posted on November 8, 2010 under Answers, Hotmail | Leave a comment
My contacts are telling me that my Hotmail account is sending them a Viagra email. I’ve changed the Hotmail password but the problem persists. How can I stop this?
Cherie
It looks like your Hotmail account has been compromised in the past. The spammer stole the email addresses of your contacts; and that’s the reason they are receiving Viagra email messages from you. It’s also possible that you are all victims of a spoof.

Hotmail Plus – How many emails can I send?
Posted on October 22, 2010 under Answers, Email, Hotmail | Leave a comment
What can I do to raise the limit of how many emails I send per day from Hotmail account? My main categorized email list is 100 persons – this limits me to 3 emails per day, right? Will the paid account (Hotmail Plus) allow me to send unlimited email in a day? Thank you,
Dianne Glenney
The Hotmail email sending limit (free accounts) is 300 messages in a day. Upgrading to Hotmail Plus will “probably” increase the number of emails you can send daily. However, the service refrains from providing a concrete figure – check out Rosalie R (Hotmail staff) reply on the Windows Live Solutions Center web site; direct link to Hotmail sending limit – screenshot below.

Filter or block unwanted emails
Posted on August 18, 2010 under Email, Hotmail | Leave a comment
I have some acquaintances that are constantly bombarding me with emails. I’ve gotten to the point when I say to myself : No More !!! These messages reach the email inbox directly and I have to spend considerable time trying to weed them out. Is there a way to filter or block unwanted emails? Thank you in advance.
George [xxxx@hotmail.com]
An email message sent to your account will typically be delivered directly to the inbox. However, there are a couple of ways to change this default action at your Hotmail account. More »
Download Live email

I have been using live.com as my email. I want to download my mail to my computer and work with it there … offline … comfortably. I HATE the way Live has their display set up. I find their “features” slow and cumbersome. Even though most of that is probably because I have a slow connection… and I cannot do anything about it. I have been floundering around for 2 months trying to resolve this problem. Can you give me any direction??? Thanks. (I have VISTA … ughhhhh)
Ruby
Downloading messages from an online account and storing them on your computer requires the use of an email program or an email client in geeky language. Does Outlook Express, Outlook, or Windows Mail ring a bell? These are all email programs. So which one should you use to download Live email? More »
Hotmail automatically deleted my email?
Posted on August 15, 2010 under Hotmail | 3 Comments
I logged in at my account yesterday (like I do daily) and saw that Hotmail has automatically deleted email. I can no longer find 5 years worth of email. Where have they all gone? I am really worried – there were some very important messages. How can I get those emails that were removed from my account? Also, can you tell me why this has happened? I trust that Hotmail, being such a popular service, will not make its users go through this ordeal.
Mina Sabry
The small print on most of these free email services clearly states that they cannot be held responsible for the loss of information (messages and/or contact list). Thus, if Hotmail has ‘automatically’ deleted email from the account, don’t put the blame squarely on them. It was your duty to take a backup of the Hotmail email. Anyway, on the bright side, the chances of recovering the missing messages are pretty high. More »
