Get IMAP access on your email
Posted on April 8, 2011 under Email, Gmail, Internet Tips | 3 Comments
There are two popular email protocols for downloading messages to the local computer – POP3 and IMAP. The former is available on most, if not all, email accounts either for free or by paying a nominal sum. For instance, you can get POP3 enabled on a Yahoo! email account for an yearly charge of $20.
Even though IMAP is a newer and probably a better protocol than POP3, unfortunately most email accounts do not support it. If it’s missing on your service too, there is no need to despair as in this post, I shall explain how you can get IMAP access on any email account and that too for free!

Downgrade the Windows Live Mail upgrade!
Posted on March 8, 2011 under Email, Windows Live Mail | Leave a comment
Some updates were automatically installed on my computer and that has changed Windows Live Mail, the program I use for email. I now have Windows Live Mail 2011 which I’ve came to know is a part of Windows Live Essentials. I just don’t like the upgraded Windows Live Mail program and prefer the old interface. I was thinking of uninstalling the program but that may also remove all stored email messages, right? What is the best way to downgrade Windows Live Mail to get back to the older version?
Vandana Mathur
Unfortunately, the upgraded version of Windows Live Mail hasn’t been received well by Windows 7 users. And you can’t blame them. Firstly, the act of smuggling in the Essentials pack as a critical update was kind of cheeky. Secondly, the interface of the new Windows Live Mail 2011 is radically different from the older version. Just when Outlook Express and Windows Mail Vista users were adjusting to a new email client, out comes another one with a completely new layout. Anyway, here is how you can get rid of the Windows Live Mail upgrade and go back to the original version.

Closure of Hotmail account: phishing scam example
Posted on March 7, 2011 under Email, Hotmail, Internet Tips | 2 Comments
I’ve received an email from the Hotmail Team (pilsbryi@hotmail.com) with the subject “Closure of Hotmail Account!!!”. I’ve been asked to provide my name, password, date of birth, country/territory. Is this valid or a scam?
Richard Abraham
This is most definitely a phishing scam and should be junked right away. Select the message, click “Mark as” and choose the “Phishing scam” from the drop down menu – refer image below. Once you’ve done that, continue reading to find out how I immediately identified this ‘Closure of Hotmail account’ as a scam.

Email unavailable – is it possible to get back your address?
Posted on December 16, 2010 under Answers, Email | Leave a comment
My wife wants to open a new Gmail account with the address of [deleted]. It says it’s taken. We believe that it was taken by us some years ago and now it says it is unavailable. Is the email account still alive and being used or is it dormant?
Gerry
Free accounts provided by services like Gmail, Hotmail or Yahoo! have one catch – the email address will expire if it’s not used frequently. Depending on the service, this period of inactivity can vary from a few days to months. Users, thus, have to login at least once to continue maintaining the account else the email will become unavailable.

Download and save Bigpond email messages to your computer
Posted on December 14, 2010 under Email, ISP | Leave a comment
Your Bigpond email account resides on the computers of the ISP. As per their new policy, all messages older than 180 days will be removed permanently from Bigpond mail servers. So what can you do? There are two solutions actually. The first is to shift all the messages to a personal folder and continue using the account via the Bigpond webmail interface. The second (which is more elegant) is to download and save the Bigpond email messages by transferring them using email program (also known as email clients). More »
Bigpond email settings
Posted on December 14, 2010 under Email, ISP | Leave a comment
As per the new policy, Bigpond stores your messages on its servers for only 180 days. Emails that you have deleted or have been marked as spam will only be retained for 7 days. It’s strongly recommended that users either move the messages to a personal folder or, better still, download them to the local computer with the help of programs such as Outlook Express or Windows Live Mail. This is where Bigpond email settings are useful – email programs need this information to connect to the account on the server. More »

I’m a Bigpond subscriber and don’t like the username. Is it possible to get another email address – different one, perhaps? How difficult is that and will it involve other adjustments? Also if I change the Bigpond email address what happens to the old one? Will that account still receive emails?
Virginia Burns
