This account is currently blocked from sending messages – Hotmail problem
Posted on July 26, 2010 under Hotmail | 10 Comments
I’ve been using Hotmail for years but yesterday it developed a problem all of a sudden because of which I am not able to send any emails. The error I get is – “This account is currently blocked from sending messages. If you don’t think you’ve violated the Windows Live Terms of Use, please contact customer support.”
I am completely confused and don’t understand how I could have ever ‘violated the Windows Live Terms of Use’. Also I want to know how to contact Hotmail customer support because I need to unblock the account ASAP?
Willie Green
Typically, Hotmail throws the ‘This account is currently blocked from sending messages’ message when it believes that the subscriber has violated the Terms of Use (TOU); for example, by indulging in activities representative of spammers. Unfortunately, in most cases, people don’t realize that their seemingly harmless dispatching of email can trigger off the automated check on Hotmail. To understand why this happens and how to unblock the Hotmail account, read on. More »
Captcha definition – Why are you asked to type the two words?
Posted on July 16, 2010 under Blogging, Internet Tips, Other, Web Development | 8 Comments
It is very difficult to figure out the purpose of the mixed-up wavy letters in the two words. I think I have them right, in fact, I know I do in some cases. Please explain the point to me.
Anne Lawson
Why are the two words one is required to type when registering always so fancy in design? It’s hard to read them.
Maja Novak
What is Captcha? Definition and a super quick intro
Anne and Maja are referring to what is known as Captcha, or more correctly, Text CAPTCHA. Nowadays you find them almost everywhere on the net… both popular and the not-so-famous web sites and blogs. And there is one right on this page – scroll down to check it out.
Captcha is a type of challenge-response test used in computing to ensure that the response is not generated by a computer
(source Wikipedia). In layman’s terms, the aim of the text Captcha is to offer a puzzle which only humans are able to solve. Typically, text Captcha has a set of randomly generated alphanumeric characters that are wavy, battered, crossed with lines and / or close to each other (almost overlapping).

Fonts in email signature
Is it possible to use other fonts in my email signature on Yahoo? I am not happy with what is on offer. I think these fonts are too plain and want something more fancy that actually looks like a signature.
Wayne Detzler
At the time of writing, Yahoo mail has only a few fonts: Arial, Bookman Old Style, Courier, Garamond, Lucida Console, Tahoma, Times New Roman and Verdana. Unfortunately, there is no ‘direct’ way of using a different font in the email signature. However, here is a nice and simple workaround.

Windows 7 Quick Launch bar

I have a brand new windows 7 computer sitting beside me. Where is the quick launch bar? I had loved this on my old Vista computer but can’t seem to find it on Windows 7. The Quick Launch bar was a really neat feature because it saved so much time (and clicking). Please don’t tell me that Microsoft has done away with it.
The Quick Launch toolbar which was present to the right of the “Start” button in many previous versions of the Windows has been removed in Windows 7! Don’t despair because the Microsoft has come up with an elegant solution. In fact, it’s so straightforward that you’ll wonder why it wasn’t implemented earlier.

Decrease size of icons in Windows 7 taskbar
Microsoft has done away with the Quick Launch toolbar in Windows 7. The Taskbar stands up to the ‘task’- bad pun, I know… couldn’t help myself! You can place shortcuts to any program in the Windows 7 Taskbar and it works just like the Quick Launch found in earlier versions of the operating system. Obviously, the Taskbar has retained its old functionality – showing an icon of any program window that’s currently open and running on your computer.

Favorite search engine

It comes as no surprise that the majority voted Google as their favourite search engine – obviously, you didn’t need to be a rocket scientist to figure that one out. But what was enlightening from the results of a poll I started a couple of months back is that Yahoo comes in second with double digits (at the time of writing, July 2010).

Chrome on Mac: install and usage
Posted on July 15, 2010 under Google | Leave a comment
Chrome, the fantabulous free web browser from Google was initially available only for the Windows operating system. However, very soon after the launch, the company started releasing Mac and Linux versions of the software. I don’t think Google would have ever imagined that Chrome for Mac would be as successful as its Windows counterpart.

Hotmail not attaching original message to forwards and replies
Posted on July 7, 2010 under Hotmail | 3 Comments
I use Hotmail email and am facing a particular problem. When I compose a reply or forward an email the original text is not included in the message. This has happened all of a sudden. How do I correct this?
Deidre Taylor
This indeed seemed a perplexing issue. The first step was to login at Hotmail to make sure things were fine at my account. I was using the Chrome web browser and saw no problems. I then implemented what I fondly called the “browser test” (my terminology) and started checking with other web browsers. It quickly came to light that with Firefox Hotmail was not attaching the original message when forwarding or composing an email.

Get Windows messenger
Posted on July 7, 2010 under Windows Live Messenger | Leave a comment
I have been using Hotmail for many years and, as you can guess, this email is very important to me. In the past I have accessed the inbox through the Messenger program on Windows. I purchased a new laptop with Windows 7 yesterday. Could you let me know how to get Windows Messenger on this new computer?
Windows Messenger program from Microsoft should already be installed on your new Windows 7 computer. You’ll find it under “All Programs” -> “Windows Live“. However, chances are that an upgrade is available so the moment you start the Messenger, a pop-up will ‘force’ you to get the latest version. Here is what happened with me on a brand new Sony VAIO.

Get two email accounts in one window
Posted on July 7, 2010 under Email | Leave a comment
I have two email accounts which I check one by one and that takes time. Is there a way to get these 2 emails in one window? Would very much appreciate if you can provide guidance.
Iqbal Siddiqui
There are two primary ways to check an email account. The more popular method, webmail, involves the use of the web browser program while the other option is to employ an email client or an email program. One can also get email on a cell phone (iPhone), a nice alternative in this ‘mobile world’.
Anyway, coming back to the question, Iqbal, who is presently using webmail, opens two browser tabs and logs in at the accounts separately. He prefers to continue with webmail and get Gmail and Hotmail – his two email accounts – in one web browser window / tab. Here is what he should do.
